Freight Returns to Hampton County's Salkehatchie Line — Government

HAMPTON COUNTY — The whistle returned in March.

On March 26, 2026, Palmetto Railways pulled its first freight train along the Salkehatchie Rail Line — the first regularly scheduled freight service on the Hampton County track in years.

The train carried 31 cars of fertilizer and potash out of Charleston, winding through rural Hampton County and into the nearby agricultural markets. It marked a return to service Palmetto Railways has been working toward since late 2025.

The Salkehatchie Line

The Salkehatchie Rail Line runs through Hampton County and Colleton County, historically serving timber, agriculture, and industrial freight. Like many rural rail corridors, it fell into disuse as short-haul trucking took over. Rising fuel costs and renewed industrial interest in rail freight brought it back into operation.

Palmetto Railways — a division of the South Carolina Ports Authority — runs short-line and connecting rail throughout the state. Its role is to extend port freight access inland.

What This Means for Hampton County

  • Reduced shipping costs for farmers and timber operators
  • Potential rail-served industrial sites becoming viable for recruitment
  • New rail-crossing traffic affecting Estill, Varnville, and Hampton
  • Demand for skilled rail labor, including certified welders — which ties into programs at Hampton County High School's CTE track

Public Safety Note

Residents should note: active rail crossings may see longer blocked times when trains pass. State law prohibits stopping on or walking across tracks. For the schedule of crossings, contact Palmetto Railways directly.
